"what all desire is unfailing love. better to be poor than a liar."
this proverb has always struck me as odd. the first part makes sense to me...but the second part makes me pause. why is poverty being connected to unfailing love? it seems like the proverb-writer (likely solomon) is saying there's lots of people who claim they 'don't need love'...but they are liars. maybe solomon is even hinting that people who say they 'don't need love' are often people with great wealth. possibly then, the correlation is that wealth squeezes our time and drives us to make success about accumulation of stuff and money rather than love for others and for the less fortunate. not sure exactly all the implications of this proverb. what do you think? does everyone desire love?
