heaven and hell, rob bell and love wins

this past weekend one of my favorite speakers and authors--rob bell--was criticized for a promotional video he posted advertising his newest book "love wins". the book in question has not yet been released but the promotional video touches on the always sensitive topic of heaven and hell. Bell raises the question, "how can a good God send anyone to such a terrible place of eternal torment as hell?

the question is one that has been debated from the earliest origins A.D., when an early 3rd century theologian named Origen put forth a complex doctrine called "Apocatastasis", in which he ultimately concluded that everyone would be saved by God--get this--even the devil. though the origins of the word "apostate" don't seem to register earlier than 1300, i might guess that the word "apostate" was originally used by churches in direct opposition to Origen's doctrine.

orthodox christian theology has always taught, in accordance with the hebrew scriptures and new testament scriptures, that there is a final judgement for each individuals life, the outcome of which is either eternal life (heaven) or eternal isolation (hell). in fact, Jesus, the Son of God, speaks more plainly (and more often) about hell in His teachings than almost any other topic besides the Kingdom of Heaven. so how does this have anything to do with us? actually, everything.

all of us want to know what we're here for, and what it means to get real answers about what happens to us when we're no longer here. in this video Rob Bell gets at the heart of what we all ask questions about regardless of whether we believe in God or not. so, let's get after it. instead of dodging these questions as if they're unanswerable and increasing our anxieties when we encounter the unexplainable, let's grow up into the discovery of who we are and explore what is true. by all means, read Rob Bell's book, and any other book that explores our eternal destiny. only make sure to include the Bible in your search too because it claims to be the source of truth...and in fact, is the epicenter for the story of heaven and hell and who goes where.

ignorance is not always bliss, and whatever your level of anxiety about eternal matters is...you are responsible for your own life. though i don't know what rob bell concludes, i do know the title of his book is true: love wins. and it might be added, apathy loses.
