light

i love the simple creativity of this video, which promotes the new mutemath album. . .which i am incidentally very excited about. side note: new u2 comes out in early 2009, coldplay is releasing b-sides of the music they did not release soon, AND now mutemath is working on a new project. though there are some things very wrong with our world, this is all very very right :-)

okay back to the video. simple idea: every time the drummer hits a drum a light comes on. sort of a glorified version of "clap-on, clap-off". however, in this scenario the light is responsive to the dynamic of the drummer. in other words, the light is brighter if the drummer plays harder, and dimmer if the drummer plays softer.

i can't help but think there's a much deeper symbolism for us in this: will you live your life with an increasing passion that sheds light by which others can see hope in the midst of darkness, or will you continue to shrink back from the passion inside you b/c you're uncertain if any light would be shed at all, much less, where that light might take you?

"for all that we struggle, for all we pretend
you know. . . it don't come down to nothing but love in the end
ours is a road that is strewn with goodbyes
and as it unfolds, as it all unwinds
remember your soul is the one thing you can't compromise,
step out of the shadows, we're gonna go where we can shine"
