Coldplay's new song

have you heard the new coldplay tunes yet? i've been hooked listening to them non-stop for the past few days. viva la vida is incredibly unique sonically, and violet hill is easily one of my favorite coldplay songs . . . period. as with most coldplay songs the lyrics are quite cryptic, but the hook line in violet hill grabs me immediately "if you love me, won't you let me know" especially in the context to the rest of the song lyrics. so i did some searching around and found out a little bit more about the song from some dedicated fans at songmeanings.net:who writes

"I have a feeling the song is essentially about politics, war, and religious hypocrisy, from a soldier's point of view. It could be referring to the war in Iraq, or any other war--past, present, or future. He's talking about politics and how we are controlled by our governments. "When the future's architectured/ by a carnival of idiots on show." He's talking about an increasingly "religious" society, "when the banks became cathedrals/ and the fog became God" and its apparent hypocrisy (supporting the killing of others to aid their own cause) "priests clutched onto bibles/ and went out to fit their rifles." And he's talking about soldiers that feel as though they're being used for a cause they may not believe in "I don't want to be a soldier/ with the captain of some sinking ship."

personally, I think the song calls out the trouble we have with people, with God and with people who claim to follow God. the love get's lost in a sea of chaotic messages--political, religious and media-centered--and we are left feeling abandoned and untrusting of people and certainly of God, even though we hear that He loves us. it's interesting to me that this has been the same struggle throughout human history. almost 3,000 years ago in the hebrew scriptures the prophet malachi records the people's response to the idea of God's love for all people.

the scripture in Malachi 1:2 says
"I have loved you," says the LORD.
"But you ask, 'How have you loved us?'
