my best friend and i see God very differently. he would say essentially, "there is no God, though no one could ever know for sure". he doesn't really think God is necessary to live a good life. he has some really whimsical stories about how he views God, and sent me this illustration this week via e-mail in light of one such story. i have to laugh . . . because this is very true of all of us at one point or another . . . but at the same time, i long for my friends to know the reality of God in their lives: how good He is, how loving, how alive, how saving, how amazing. of course that doesn't change my respect for anyone who disagrees, it just challenges me to find new ways to articulate the invisible.
Maxine was driving down the street in a sweat because she had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place.
Looking up toward heaven, she said, 'Lord, take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to church every Sunday for the rest of my life and give up sex and tequila.'
Miraculously, a parking place appeared.
She looked up again and said, 'Never mind. I found one.
