Crazy (cover) - Brett Allen

i've talked about this guy before...and i mean it when i say, he's someone i'm privileged to know. no, i'm not talking about gnarls barkley (which is actually two guys;-)...i'm talking about brett allen. he's a good friend, and an incredibly gifted singer and creative. this past weekend he opened the services at the crossing with this cover of 'crazy,' the #1 song of 2006. the song has always been a cross section of styles and genres but this weekend brett took it one step further and creatively rearranged the song to draw out it's meaningfulness in a fresh and dare i say, disturbing way. it was hard to know how to feel after listening...should i clap? should i be offended? was that song about me?!

i love how good art often leaves us with a question in our gut...wondering what we're supposed to think about what we've just encountered. when that happens to me i try to pay attention, and explore why i'm so moved. it's like a treasure hunt has begun between my mind and my soul because i want to understand why i was stirred, why i was off-set, why i resonated with the experience i had. and sometimes as i dive into the 'why's' i discover beauty buried right beneath the surface of something i've encountered a thousand times and--until now--had missed.

that's how i felt this weekend.

so, thanks to brett, i'm off on a new treasure hunt to uncover the thing behind the reaction.

i hope this week you're able to have a moment or two where something you've experienced a thousand times gets repackaged in a new light so that you're surprised by what you missed right in front of you.

I too was moved by the opening song! I feel it prepared us all for such a powerful message. Such a great weekend :)
