weekly proverb

this past summer i've had the amazing privilege of having my hind-end kicked by a good friend and cross-fit trainer, brandon. what makes cross-fit training so incredible is that the workouts only last for about 15 minutes--sometimes less--and afterwards i am beat tired. but after only a few sessions i saw immediate changes in my fitness, overall health and more importantly in my mindset. there's just something about having a coach who can push you beyond what you thought you were capable of.

i've heard that the brain is as much a muscle as it is a hard-drive. in other words, our brains need to be worked out intentionally, stretched and challenged in order to function in strength. the more i hang out with brandon, the more i realize that my brain isn't as strong as i'd like it to be...because my first impulse is to give up a lot sooner than i should. so lately i've been thinking a lot about how to develop my mind so that it is trained to respond to what i require of my body. i've been trying to feed myself positive thoughts (and good food) well before i get into the gym, so that when the negative thoughts (and exhaustion) come midway through my workout (as they always do :-) i'm able to reassure myself, shrug them off and persevere. 15 minutes may not seem like a long workout, but when you're in the middle of pushing yourself to the limit it feels like an eternity!

a good proverb i just recently heard sums it up well, "as a person thinks in their heart, so they are".
